As a child Cheryl would spend hours listening to the family collection of albums from the Columbia Record Club, spinning the entire collection of Chicago albums, Three Dog Night, the Carpenters and even Perry Como. The first 45 record she bought was ‘It’s not Easy Being Green’ by Kermit the Frog. Her grade school offered a ‘Special Music’ class where a select group of musically inclined students were assembled into a small choir and also practiced the recorder.
When Cheryl was 10, her Dad would sit on his bed in his room and play the acoustic guitar and sing folk songs with his amazing bass voice, all to an audience of one, until he kicked Cheryl and the guitar out of her parents room and into hers.
The first guitar Cheryl officially owned was an electric Kay guitar. Her Dad made a stereo system for her birthday with an input for the guitar - yes, her Dad bought the components and assembled a turntable/radio the around the hand-built speakers. She would spend hours in her room teaching herself how to play the guitar to the likes of Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Yes and The Beatles.
